چکیده

Laurence D. Barron (Fig. 1) was born in Southampton (United Kingdom) in 1944. He studied Chemistry at the Northern Polytechnic and graduated with a first class honours degree from London University (internal) in 1965. He went on to study for his doctoral degree at Lincoln College (Oxford University) under the supervision of Prof. Peter W. Atkins. At Oxford, he discovered a new fundamental light scattering mechanism from chiral molecules from which he predicted the new phenomena of Rayleigh and Raman optical activity (ROA). After completion of his PhD in 1969, Laurence moved to Cambridge University to work with David Buckingham (Fig. 2) where they developed the definitive theory of ROA in 1971 [4] and utilised this phenomenon to obtain vibrational optical activity spectra of chiral molecules through the use of circularly polarised Raman spectroscopy [3]. Magnetic Raman optical activity and Raman electron paramagnetic resonance

All molecules in a magnetic field parallel to the incident light beam show a small difference in the intensity of Raman scattering at 900 in right and left circularly polarized incident light. The most interesting effects occur in vibrational resonance Raman scattering from odd—electron transition metal halides, and in pure electronic resonance Raman scattering from both odd— and even—electron ...

Vibrational Raman optical activity of 1-phenylethanol and 1-phenylethylamine: revisiting old friends.

The samples used for the first observations of vibrational Raman optical activity (ROA) in 1972, namely both enantiomers of 1-phenylethanol and 1-phenylethylamine, have been revisited using a modern commercial ROA instrument together with state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. The simulated ROA spectra reveal for the first time the vibrational origins of the first reported ROA signals, which ...

The development of biomolecular Raman optical activity spectroscopy

Following its first observation over 40 years ago, Raman optical activity (ROA), which may be measured as a small difference in the intensity of vibrational Raman scattering from chiral molecules in rightand left-circularly polarized incident light or, equivalently, the intensity of a small circularly polarized component in the scattered light using incident light of fixed polarization, has evo...

Raman optical activity demonstrates poly(L-proline) II helix in the N-terminal region of the ovine prion protein: implications for function and misfunction.

The aqueous solution structure of the full-length recombinant ovine prion protein PrP(25-233), together with that of the N-terminal truncated version PrP(94-233), have been studied using vibrational Raman optical activity (ROA) and ultraviolet circular dichroism (UVCD). A sharp positive band at approximately 1315 cm(-1) characteristic of poly(L-proline) II (PPII) helix that is present in the RO...

1 A historical review of optical activity phenomena

Yet each in itself – this was the uncanny, the antiorganic, the life-denying character of them all – each of them was absolutely symmetrical, icily regular in form. They were too regular, as substance adapted to life never was to this degree – the living principle shuddered at this perfect precision, found it deathly, the very marrow of death – Hans Castorp felt he understood now the reason why...
